Rachael Yamagata Answers Five Simple Questions (and One Trick One)

Rachael Yamagata Answers Five Simple Questions (and One Trick One) image
The player Don’t let Rachael Yamagata fool you. She may sing and write intimate, complex, moody songs that explore the soul, but she’s still a girl who wants to have fun. Really. With her husky voice (think a hoarse Scarlett Johansson), hearty laugh and adventurous spirit, she’s willing to play along with almost anything, even if the joke’s on her. Now a Philadelphia resident and Phillies fanatic, she took time out before an October 28 tour stop in Washington D.C.

Music DVD Review: Sonny Rollins - Live in ‘65 & ‘68

Written by Fumo Verde

I’ve always liked Sonny Rollins so when I had the chance to Live in ’65 & ’68 I was all over it. As much as I like jazz I always feel that I don’t know enough. Pictures on album covers and bios on the Internet shed some light on the artist and how they act and react to their own tunes, but seeing them live or even on DVD as it is here, truly opens the portal between the musician and their music.

This DVD contains two shows both recorded in Denmark, the first at Tivoli Halls, Copenhagen on October 31, 1965.

Music DVD Review: Bill Evans - Live in ‘64-’75

Bill Evans was a famous and influential jazz pianist. He was a member of Miles Davis’ sextet in 1958 for eight months and was asked back to record Kind of Blue. Davis wrote in his autobiography “I've sure learned a lot from Bill Evans. He plays the piano the way it should be played.” As a leader, Evans most acclaimed trio found him joined by bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian although that line-up was cut short by LaFaro’s untimely death in a car accident at the age of 25 in 1961.

Eminem’s Relapse Due For Release On December 23?

While a spokesperson for Eminem’s label, Interscope, told MTV News “there’s been no date scheduled for it,” a listing posted Monday on Amazon.com suggests that an LP from the Detroit MC will be in stores just in time for Christmas.

International News: Kanye drops hip hop for electro on new album

International News: Kanye drops hip hop for electro on new album image
US magazine Rolling Stone were given a preview listen of Kanye West’s new album 808s & Heartbreak recently, and they’ve reported that it’s comprised entirely of ?electronic’ music with not a single hip hop styled track in sight. “All vocals were sung and treated with the electro “auto-tune” effect,” wrote Rolling Stone of the album. “But there was no rapping or overt sampling, just emotional waves of electronic sound, beats and occasional strings.” Kanye’s penchant for dance beats is of course no secret, having famously sampled Daft Punk on his last album’s first single Stronger.

‘Musical benches’ to serenade public with Beatles, Stones and Dusty

'Musical benches' to serenade public with Beatles, Stones and Dusty image
Musical benches playing the songs of The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and Queen are being erected across Britain. The bizarre scheme has been to put in place as part of Nokia’s new Comes With Music package, aiming to discover regional differences in musical tastes. The company conducted a survey where people chose from a long list of popular songs - and a top ten for each city was calculated. Perhaps surprisingly, the most popular song across the country was found to be Dusty Springfield’s ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’, coming top in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London and Leeds.
