Music Review: K.J. Denhert - Lucky 7
![]()
One in a while, you come across a musician who so effectively cobbles together a wide range of styles so effortlessly you swear you’ve heard it somewhere before…but you can’t quite put a finger on it. New York City born and bred troubadour K.J. Denhert is one of those musicians. Everyone looks for reference points when presented with an unfamiliar artist; for Denhert, she is a lot like Bonnie Raitt with a little less blues and a little more jazz. Or Lizz Wright with a little less gospel and a little more rock.

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz and John Mayer have taken to their respective blogs to tell each other how they respect each other. It started yesterday in a post titled “yes its a crush,” where the FOB posted a video of Mayer and prefaced the clip with “what he says in the first thirty seconds of this clip is something i have felt for the last year. exactly.” Mayer, an omniscient force when it comes to things on the Internet, responded swiftly from Hong Kong, saying, “You’re one of the best eggs in the music industry, hands down.

Music Review: Judith Owen - Mopping Up Karma
![]()
Judith Owen is the sort of artist that makes you want to throw labels out the window. So what if she’s generally listed under jazz? There’s nothing on her albums that wouldn’t play well on an intelligent FM rock station — that is, if you can find one these days. I suppose the jazz tag has stuck to Owen because of her extraordinary vocal purity and technique. Her natural gift is a voice like watered silk, full of coloratura glints and shadows, but she brings in shrewdly intelligent phrasing and a gutsy rhythmic sense that work equally well as alt-rock.

Interview: Band of the Week - Rachael Sage
![]()
The best word to describe Rachael Sage's sound is theatrical, and her newest album Chandelier is truly theatre for your ears. Lyrically each song is an act from the stage play of Sage's life; musically each is a mini musical in scope, breadth and drama. As a former performer with the New York City Ballet, Sage's flare for the dramatic is understandable, but while you may expect a prima ballerina to be a drama queen she is far from it.

Music Review: Frank Sinatra - Nothing But the Best
![]()
After Frank Sinatra's successful run with Capitol Records he decided to strike out on his own and start his own label. So, in the late 60's he founded Reprise. Nothing But the Best is a greatest hits collection from Frank's Reprise years. While Sinatra's Capitol songs are the type of songs you hear in musicals and movie soundtracks, his Reprise works are more the type you hear over your spaghetti dinner. Sinatra still sang swingy, vocal pop but now the strings sounded more classical and the songs were more reflective.
