Trendwatch: Pinup Girl-Punk

Trendwatch: Pinup Girl-Punk image
The Perp: Amy WinehouseThe Look: Prints, bustiers and belts, oh my!While she’s no stranger to the itsy-bitsy dress, Amy Winehouse is better known for her lo-fi ensembles consisting of tank tops, skinnypants and ballet flats. But that look, along with a few missteps, pre-dates her recent effort to get clean. To that end, it’s with a great amount of joy that we are noticing a distinct fashion evolution happening south of the ‘hive. Let’s face it, a conscious effort to look uniquely fashionable can only be a good sign for our Grammy-winning goddess.

The pop star's rise has been nothing short of a phenomenon in the U.K., where her debut album, "Spirit," has sold more than 1.6 million copies in just 14 weeks. "We have absolutely no plans for her to tour until 2010," Lewis' manager, Richard Griffiths, tells Billboard.com. "We're going to make ('Spirit') the biggest record in the world, then we'll make another record in 2009, and tour on the back of that." "Spirit" arrives April 8 in the United States through Sony BMG's J Records.

Lil Wayne Makes Up For Lateness With Rock-Star Swagger At New Jersey Show

Yeah, it was getting kind of ridiculous. Two hours and 15 minutes of waiting, laboring through a multitude of local opening acts — one of whom had the audacity to rap over Harold Faltermeyer’s “Beverly Hills Cop” classic, “Axel F.” Two and a half hours in, the loud-mouth young lady sitting behind the MTV News family was right on the money: “Where the f— is Weeeeeezy at?” she asked, in exasperation.

The Lil Wayne fan, like a majority of the audience, had been waiting for the hottest MC in the game since the advertised 8 p.m.

Music Review: Piers Lawrence Quartet - Stolen Moments

Music Review: Piers Lawrence Quartet - Stolen Moments image
There's something very satisfying about sitting down and listening to four talented jazz pros combining to provide a smooth and cohesive sound. It's a task that is far more difficult than it sounds, but the Piers Lawrence Quartet has nailed it on the group's new album, Stolen Moments, releasing March 1st on the Jazznet Media label. Armed with a soulful guitar and sporting his signature beret, Piers Lawrence is a regular fixture on the New York jazz scene, and has a rich history that includes everything from Broadway to touring with Wilson Pickett.

Photos by Kathryn Yu You’d think all the fuzzed-out pop-rockin’ found on latest release Distortion might have coaxed Stephin Merritt off his cozy stool from the get-go, but there he was last night as the Magnetic Fields kicked off the first show of four at New York City’s Town Hall. A reverentially quiet crowd took in a two-part set that interspersed a bunch of Distortion numbers with a cavalcade of classics from the Fields and other Merritt projects. Naturally, the set also featured plenty of dry-humored Merritt banter.

Silver Apples, Spectrum Do Dallas’ Melodica Fest

Silver Apples, Spectrum Do Dallas' Melodica Fest image
Melodica 2008 bills itself as "a different kind of music festival," and that much is true: most music festivals named after one particular instrument actually feature a lot of bands who employ said instrument in their music. But we’ll leave the semantics to the cynics and focus instead on the festival lineup, blowing through several venues in Dallas’ Expo Park neighborhood today (February 22) and tomorrow.

Music DVD Review: Winger - Live

I had just graduated from high school around the time of the whole hair-metal explosion in the mid 80's, so the music of Winger and other popular bands of the genre continue to hold a special place in my heart. I was a decent fan of Winger's first two albums, 1988's self-titled debut, and 1990's In the Heart of the Young, but I lost touch with the band during the mid-90's after grunge-rock came along to kick hair-metal off the block.

It had been almost 15 years since the last time I took a Winger album for a spin, but my interest was peaked again last year when I stumbled across Kip Winger's Down Incognito album in a music store bargain bin, where I think they were actually offering you money to take it.

Music Review: Steve Reid Ensemble - Daxaar

Music Review: Steve Reid Ensemble - Daxaar image
I'm not one for using sports analogies, yet when I think about the role played by the drummer in most bands, it's hard not to think of the equally vital, but unnoticed until they make a mistake position, of goalkeeper in soccer or goalie in hockey. Situated in behind the rest of the team (um sorry, band) the drummer is seemingly off in his own little world. Like goalies they are often seen as individuals in what is otherwise considered a joint effort, and usually allowances are made for their eccentricities.
