International News: Omid 16B's hedonist health scare image
London progressive house type Omid 16B chatted to Skrufff recently about his eclectic upcoming double album Like 3 Ears and 1 Eye’ and revealed that he learned some vital lessons from the demise of Hooj Tunes, the label he was previously signed to. The Iranian born Londoner’s career briefly faltered when Hooj went into liquidation in 2004, prompting him to spend time meditating, reading and walking round the local park analysing his relationships, he said.

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static image
Jack Johnson may be a former pro surfer, but he ain’t no Beach Boy. Where the songs of Brian Wilson (who never actually surfed, remember) celebrate the rush and exuberant triumph of catching a wave, Johnson draws on the sport’s solitary, Zen-like side — the gentle, rolling rhythms of his music match his simple, nature-inspired language. Over the course of three platinum albums, plus the bulk of the chart-topping 2006 soundtrack to Curious George, this laid-back worldview has been enough to make the affable Johnson an unlikely pop sensation.

Florida ‘08: Voters Still Making Their Voices Heard In Unsanctioned Primary

This election season has already been full of firsts: first female front-runner, first African-American front-runner and the first primary election that won’t actually count.

That’s right, Florida’s primary election is on Tuesday, and the National Democratic Party is refusing to recognize it. The party says it won’t seat any of the delegates at the nominating convention, and the candidates have all agreed not to campaign there.

Bobby Brown Goes Country: ‘I Felt It Was Something I Could Conquer’

“I did not have a heart attack. No. I went to the hospital, they pushed my stomach, I farted, then they sent me home.”

Raw and spontaneous as always, Bobby Brown had a handful of MTV News staff members smiling when he came in for an interview Thursday. Unprompted, he was doing the “running man” and cracking jokes, and before he left the building, he yelled down the hall to me, “I’m doing a country album! Yeah, I’m doing country now!” No one in the MTV newsroom could believe it.

Ghislain Poirier Serves Up New LP on Ninja Tune, Tours

Ghislain Poirier Serves Up New LP on Ninja Tune, Tours image
Québécois DJ Ghislain Poirier has pretty omnivorous taste. From Dizzee Rascal and Juelz Santana to obscure African hip-hop, as long as the bass thumps, Poirier has room for it in his collection. For No Ground Under, his first album on Ninja Tune, Poirier has taken a break from his recent mixing work to deliver 14 of his own original tweaked-out jams. Quite a few of the tracks on No Ground Under were featured on Poirier’s recent "Bastard Bass" Mix, which you can hear here.

International News: Justice is not Daft Punk

International News: Justice is not Daft Punk image
Ed Banger cross-bearers Justice appear to have overestimated their pull in the US. The Grammy Award-nominated duo has been forced to downsize a planned live gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden to more humble surrounds. Madison Square Garden is a Big Apple icon, and usually hosts polite, parent-approved acts like Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Elton John et al. Upcoming shows in 2008 include Matchbox Twenty, Linkin Park and Keith Urban … so you can see why the French electro boffins were being a little over-ambitious.

Concert Review: KRS One At The Roxy, Los Angeles CA 01/18/08

Concert Review: KRS One At The Roxy, Los Angeles CA 01/18/08 image
In today’s world of rap, the formula that once was adherded to by all those involved in the genre has been thrown totally out the window. The old guard of the Golden Age emcees has been sanctimoniously dumped, in favor of the new gunslingers. The young bucks of the rap game sneer loudly, showing disrespect to their musical elders with every repetitive hook they come up with. To make matters worse, many of the newbies of Hip-Hop show no interest in sitting in history class and learning more about their culture.
